That's ashame they are now opening at 9:30am. They'll miss my breakfast business. Backwards Changchun business philosophy strikes again (if the customers don't pour in at 8:00am within the first week despite no advertising - change the business hours). These people should/need to understand it takes time to establish yourself. And from what I gathered, they aren't doing any advertising. They have a very limited knowledge of how to open and develop a business. When you're located on the corner of an alley in a not-so-busy location, you need to advertise (or do your homework before opening day and have really good food!) For reference, the Steak & Egg in Beijing operates from 7:30am to 10:30pm and has developed a strong breakfast crowd. But like anywhere, it didn't happen overnight.

I just found out the hard way that the Corner Cafe no longer opens for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Opening time has been changed to 9:30 a.m.

I had dinner the other day at the Corner Café with some friends. Comparing this restaurant to “Grandma’s Kitchen in Beijing seems like quite a stretch. But this little restaurant has potential. The owner doesn’t follow the frequently seen and flawed Changchun/Guilin Lu marketing plan of charging high prices for mediocre food to become wealthy overnight (The owner is from Harbin, not Changchun). Instead, the owner wants to offer reasonable prices so as to build a loyal customer base that can afford to come dine on a regular basis. In summary, the restaurant has a long way to go before it can compare with Beijing’s Grandma’s Kitchen or the expat favorite “Steak & Egg” (both located in Beijing at Jianguomen behind the Friendship store on Xiushui Nanjie). That high level of experience and expertise is currently lacking. But in 2-3 years, it could become a new Changchun landmark. The cheesecake is delicious. I think the Corner Cafe and the French Bakery have the same mystery source. The Corner Cafe is located on the south side of Tongguan Lu, on the inside corner of an unmarked alley between Fengshun Jie and Baihui Jie, placing it 1-1/2 blocks from Renmin Dajie (west of the north side of the Noble Hotel).

I just had a hearty Irish Sunday breakfast at Corner Cafe with a couple of friends. The owner/operator, Harry, Liu Yan, gave us a sample of desserts. The chocolate cake was great, and the creamy cheesecake with the crumbled graham wafer bottom crust and the cherry topping was better than anything I've ever tasted anywhere.

On the south side of Tong Guang Lu two streets east of Ren Min Da Jie (1 block east of the Papa's near the rear of the Noble Hotel. I have never seen a menu like this outside of Granma's Kitchen in Beijing. Open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Corner Mega Breakfast includes one egg, 2 strips of bacon, a sausage, beans, hash browns and toast. for 22 yuan. Worth giving a try.
