From the first floor lobby of Changchun's 5-star Shangri-La Hotel a grand, open, curving staircase takes you to the second floor entrance to the Shang Palace Restaurant. Featuring moderately priced Chinese dishes, the extensive menu is bilingual (Chinese & English) and contains photos of many of the restaurant’s specialties. Slightly more formal than the Coffee Garden below, the Shang Palace pampers with graceful service. For lovers of Dim Sum (known in Australia as Yum Cha and in Guangzhou as Morning Tea) the Shang Palace provides a special treat on Saturdays and Sundays. For only ¥138 RMB (plus 15% service charge) for either one or two persons (buy one get one free) you can order authentic Cantonese dim sum, as well as picking up items from a buffet which features Cantonese style congee, a noodles station, char siew and stir-fried hot dishes station. This feast is available only from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

    This is a great place for Cantonese dim sum. Not the cheapest place in town but a very pleasant atmosphere with perhaps the most authentic Cantonese cuisine in Changchun. My only negative is the absurd 15% service charge applied at all Shangri-La restaurants. Since I know it does not go to the waitresses and waiters, it is obviously just another way to increase the hotel's bottom line. In my view, the lofty prices should already be adequate for that. Without the 15% service charge, I would frequent their restaurant facilities more often.
